Spells Inspiration art

Post by DerSaidin » 2009-09-06 12:57

Posting a few images I collected which help show what I'm imagining for spell effects.
They aren't exactly right, but they can inspire some nice ideas.

If they're cartoon, pretend they're not. All taken from random google images results.
Avatar (the cartoon these are from) should also give ideas for some nice player animations for launching spells.

Very cool........i'm going to start playing with some of these :D

Is there code in place to call a .md5animation file per spell?

I haven't looked into animations much yet.

If you mean animation on the actual projectile model (or whatever the spell is model);
The framework I coded for spell entities makes it easy to run any code client/server side for a particular spell entity.

If you mean casting animation on the player;
As for player animations, I haven't got to that yet. There will be some difficulty because of the way spells are implemented (with about 50 spells planned it can't use the same method q3 uses, 16 bit flags for a maximum of 16 weapons), the information on the spell currently in use is in the spell entity, separate to the player entity which leads to some small difficulty using that information when drawing the player entity (or animating it).

That will certainly be something that will be done though. Probably be done by certain spell entities setting client side variables, which are checked and will then apply to the player avatar being drawn from the following frame onwards.

From Endoperez here
Wakfu! Despite being based on a free-to-play MMORPG, it's surprisingly good. The animation and the world is gorgeus, but all the stories don't live up to its [animation's] level.

This one here is a fight between Gargaloragran and a 'xelor', or time mage, called Nox. Examples of: fog cloud, summoning a weapon, using a weapon as a focus on a spell, using a jump spell to evade an attack, generic elemental attacks, and then some more interesting things near the end.
Some nice stuff.

Some others (imo not quite as good):
